Muskoka and Haliburton sit lower and slightly further south than the Algonquin dome, so they turn about a week later and peak through the first half of October. The margin for error is wider here than almost anywhere else on this site: the display builds gradually across a large area rather than switching on and off in one corridor.
That is why it is the sensible answer for anyone booking a weekend more than two weeks out. The forecast is less certain at that range everywhere, and this is the region where being a few days wrong costs you least.
The tower above Lake of Bays is the source of most of the aerial-looking fall photographs of Ontario, and it earns it: thirty metres up on a hill, looking down on unbroken hardwood and water in three directions. It is also small, ticketed, and completely full on a peak October Saturday.
Arrowhead near Huntsville is the reliable alternative and is closer to the highway. Haliburton Highlands is the broader region behind both of them and the quietest of the three.
Killbear on Georgian Bay peaks around the same time and looks nothing like it: pine and rock and open water rather than a hardwood canopy. It is the better answer if what you want is the Group of Seven version of Ontario in autumn rather than a wall of red maple.
It carries less colour in absolute terms, and our forecast reflects that. It is a different picture, not a worse one.
Cottage country in October is the easiest fall weekend in Ontario to get right, and the accommodation is the part that sells out first.

It is the best single viewpoint in cottage country and the source of most of the photographs people picture when they think of Ontario in autumn. It is also small and ticketed and completely full on a peak October Saturday, so go early or go midweek.
Algonquin if you are going in the last week of September, Muskoka if you are going in October. Algonquin peaks earlier and harder; Muskoka peaks later, over a longer window, and is much easier to time correctly if you are booking well ahead.
